Jalapeño originates from the city of Jalapa in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Jalapeno is one of the most popular hot peppers in the U.S., but it was the development of the "TAM Mild Jalapeno" (1,000 to 1,500 Scoville), a non-hot jalapeno, that led to its spread throughout the U.S. Since then, the jalapeno has remained the "king of hot peppers" in terms of popularity. Nicknamed the "fat bullet" for its thick pulp and bullet-like shape, the jalapeño turns from green to red as it ripens, and its green pepper-like odor gives way to a fruity, bell pepper-like flavor.
